British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under growing pressure after Labour suffered major setbacks in local elections across England, while also struggling in Wales and Scotland as Reform UK continued to gain support. The results have raised fresh questions about Starmer’s leadership, less than two years after leading Labour back into government. FRANCE 24’s Gavin Lee speaks to James Lyons, who served under Starmer in Downing Street and previously worked as political editor at the Daily Mirror and The Sunday Times.

Produced by Gavin Lee, Alessandro Xenos, Théophile Vareille, Guillaume Gougeon and Daniel Whittington

  1. Starmer seems to have forgotten that people voted for change, not just a different shade of the same. Losing seats to Reform UK should be a wake-up call.

  2. After less than a year in power, losing ground in Wales and Scotland is worrying. If he can’t hold the devolved nations, what hope for the union?

  3. Gavin Lee’s piece confirms what many of us feel: Starmer is too cautious. Voters want bold action on the cost of living, not more focus-grouped centrism.

  4. James Lyons should know better than anyone that Starmer’s Downing Street operation is failing. The local election results prove the message isn’t landing.

  5. Reform UK gaining traction isn’t just a right-wing protest vote—it’s a sign Labour is ignoring working-class frustrations. Starmer needs to listen or lose more.
